A Police officer attached to the Western province North Crime Division who was allegedly addicted to Crystal Methamphetamine (ICE) through a youth whom he came to know at the Galle Face protest site was arrested on Thursday night while inhaling the drug. Police sources said that the Police Officer in question is an apprentice and he has been deployed for security duties at the Galle Face protest site. With the end of protests at Galle Face, he was assigned to duties of the Colombo North Crime Division. However, the rest of the officers have had a strong suspicion regarding his behaviour.
Also, since the officers who shared the barracks with this Policemen found that their cash had disappeared, their suspicions were aroused.
It was then that the officers of the Northern District Crime Division of the Western Province had received information that this officer was visiting a house in Peliyagoda and using the ‘ICE’ drug.
The Police officer in question was sent on five days leave by Chief Inspector of Police Dharmakeerthi, OIC of Northern District Crime Division of the Western Province.
Police said that based on information received by the OIC he was caught red-handed while using the drug ‘ICE’ together with four others at a house on Parakrama Mawatha, Peliyagoda on Thursday. Police said that the Police officer was produced before Court yesterday (23) was fined Rs.9,000.
