The 36th National School Games, revived after a lapse of two years by the Ministry of Education, will be held in four stages in October and November this year. Over 20,000 schoolboys and schoolgirls are set to participate in this event, which will include a total of 32 sports disciplines. The event was last held in 2019.
The first stage of the Games is scheduled from October 21 to 23 and the events that will be worked off are the half-marathon (Gampaha), beach volleyball (Kalpitiya), rugby football (Bandarawela), wrestling (Negombo), boxing (Colombo), weightlifting (Polonnaruwa), cycling (Anuradhapura), tennis (Colombo), taekwondo (Kegalle), judo (Nawalapitiya) and gymnastics (Colombo).
The second stage of the Games will be from October 28 to 30 and the events that will be conducted are softball cricket (Giriulla) swimming (Colombo), netball (Kurunegala), carrom (Jaffna), kabaddi (Embilipitiya) wushu (Bandaragama), aerobic gymnastics (Kandy) and handball (Moratuwa).
The third stage of the Games is from November 4 to 6 and the events that will include are hockey (Colombo), volleyball (Ruwanwella), leather ball cricket (Galle), table tennis (Ambalangoda), badminton (Colombo), basketball (Colombo), throwball (Eheliyagoda), chess (Kurunegala), karate (Kandy), elle (Trincomalee) and football (Colombo). Meanwhile, the fourth and final stage of the Games, which includes all track and field events, will be staged from November 16 to 20 at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo. Western Province completely dominated the 2019 Games and emerged overall champions with a total of 1,280 points while Central Province were the runners-up with a tally of 501 points.
Meanwhile, North Western Province were placed third in the overall championship with 437 points followed by Southern Province (327), Sabaragamuwa Province (278), Northern Province (156), North Central Province (107), Uva Province (98) and Eastern Province (78).
In addition, St. Peter’s College, Colombo clinched the Senior Championship title for Boys with 133 points while A. Rathnayake MMV, Walala won the Senior Championship for Girls’ collecting 235 points.
