Failed heist: SLPP PS member arrested

Thambuttegama police arrested a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) member Suranga Mahesh Sooriyaarachchi of the Rajanganaya Pradeshiya Sabha in connection with the Monday’s failed attempt to rob Rs.23 million from a businessman near a bank in Thambuttegama, in the wee hours of Monday.

It was reported that two armed men on a motorcycle wearing full face helmets had robbed Rs.22.3 million from a businessman near a private bank in Thambuttegama, which he had brought to be deposited in the bank.

However, the involvement of Police Sergeant Buddhika Kumara (42313) attached to the Miscellaneous Complaints Division of the Thambuttegama Police who was in the vicinity of the bank the time the robbery occurred thwarted their attempt and prevented them escaping.The robbers had attempted to shoot at the police officer and also had thrown chilli powder at him to escape.

Based on the confession made by them, the police had arrested the Pradeshiya Sabha Member, who is a 44-year-old resident of Nawasirigama, Rajanganaya. All three suspects were remanded till October 10 after being produced before the Thambuttegama Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
