People seek solace from problems through occult practices – Specialist Psychiatrist

There is a tendency among people at present towards holding sacred rituals and Bali Shanthikarma among people seeking solace from the economic and mental sufferings due to grave economic and social hardships they have to undergo, Specialist Psychiatrist Rumi Ruban said.

“These coarse practices lead towards a state of being more and more psychologically battered,’’ he further pointed out. The people have not been able to bear the economic burden. In order to reduce this burden, some people go to various occult practitioners and exorcists for reconciliation. People should be aware of this.

There were reports of incidents about people who have been deceived by such practitioners. In these reported cases people had sacrificed not only their wealth but also their children,” the Specialist Psychiatrist further said.

“The price of food is unaffordable. Because of this, instead of looking for solutions to their economic problems and finding additional sources of income, the people are going for Shanthikarma on the assumption that they have been subjected to the curse of devils and ill-effects of planets. Owing to these mythical beliefs depression increases and people become mentally ill.

Under these circumstances, a website has been launched by doctors specializing in mental diseases to provide mental health knowledge to the people. The new project is aimed at making people aware of mental illness and mental health,” Ruban further said. More details can be obtained by visiting Slcpsych.lk website.
