Five persons, including a Buddhist Monk who went to sell three Gajamuthu (Pearls) for Rs.30 million were arrested by a team of officers of the Matale Division Anti-Corruption Group with the support of Army Intelligence, at about 9.30 p.m. near the Bernard Aluvihare Stadium in Matale Thursday (06).
Based on a tip-off received by the Army Intelligence Division, a decoy was deployed to buy the Gajamuthu and the raid was carried out.
When the Monk and the others who arrived in a three-wheeler were about to sell the Gajamuthu the Police surrounded the place and arrested the group.It has been revealed during Police investigations that the Buddhist Monk who was taken into custody on suspicion was living at a temple in the Bibile area. Police said that the other suspects were residents of Bibile and Piliyandala.
