Heavy rains hit Galle

Many low-lying areas and roads were flooded and 407 members of 87 families were affected while 27 houses were damaged due to torrential rains that have been lashing the Galle District since Wednesday night, Galle District Disaster Management Centre said.

Many of the affected people were reported from the Galle Four Gravets Divisional Secretariat Division. Nearly 300 members of 60 families in Piyadigama, Dangedara and Deddugoda have been severely affected.

A total of 107 members of 27 families in the Imaduwa, Habaraduwa, Tawalama, Alpitiya, Bope, Poddala and Rathgama Divisional Secretariat areas had also been affected.

The Disaster Management Centre further said that a building of Elpitiya Igala East Primary School had been damaged when trees fell on it.

Due to the collapse of a mound on the railway line near the Minuwangoda Railway tunnel near the Galle Railway Station, the train movement on the Coastal line had been disrupted. But no casualties were reported.

Traffic was disrupted in the Galle City and many surrounding areas and vehicles that were driven towards the Karapitiya Hospital had to take alternative routes.
