Hirunika, 14 others arrested

The Cinnamon Garden Police arrested 15 individuals including former UNP Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra, while they were staging a protest near the police station yesterday.

A protest campaign on Women’s Rights was held at the Independence Square under the leadership of Hirunika Premachandra yesterday.

Following the protest, they had marched towards the UN Office in Colombo and had staged the protest there as well.

Police had arrested one of the protestors when they attempted to march towards President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s official residence in Paget Road in Colombo disregarding the police barriers.

The arrest of the woman had provoked the other protestors, following which they had gathered near the Cinnamon Garden Police and staged another protest against the arrest.

Then Police had arrested the 15 protestors including a man, Police said.
