Snatched necklace found in snatcher’s stomach

The gold necklace worth Rs.350,000, which has been snatched from a woman who was traveling in a train, was found in the snatcher’s stomach following a scan test. A 56-year-old woman employed as a child rights promotion officer residing in Kekanadura Matara, had gone to Colombo with her husband and son on Thursday (1) and was returning to Matara by train. When the train stopped at the Ahangama station and resumed its journey, a person in the train had snatched the gold necklace from the woman’s neck and jumped down from the slow moving train and had started running. Then the woman’s son also had jumped down from the train and chased the snatcher screaming and caught the looter with the help of neighbours.

At the same time, the police arrived there and arrested the suspect and questioned him about the necklace, but the boy had not revealed anything.

Thereafter the police had presented the thief to the Judicial Medical Officer of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital yesterday(2) , where the thief has been subjected to a scan from which it had been revealed that the stolen gold necklace was in the snatcher’s stomach.

The suspect is a resident of Harumalgoda, Habaraduwa. Police has kept him in a ward of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital under police protection until the necklace found in the suspect’s stomach is retrieved.
