Viyathpura sells six houses to Sri Lankan expats for Dollars

Six housing units from the Viyathpura Housing Scheme belonging to the Urban Development Authority (UDA) have already been sold under the Government's programme of selling house units on dollar terms to Sri Lankans residing and working abroad.

Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that Sri Lankans living in Dubai, the United States of America, Canada and Qatar have bought these houses and an amount of US$ 276,650 has been received in the foreign currency account of the UDA during the last two months.

People who purchase houses were also entitled to a 10 percent discount for paying the specified dollar amount at once.

Minister Ranatunga also said that Sri Lankans residing and working abroad have already applied to buy 10 more houses. Accordingly, the Minister expressed confidence that an income of about US$ 352,800 will be generated before the end of this year under the State's programme of selling housing units for dollars.

The Minister also said that plans have already afoot to generate an income of US$2 million next year through this programme.
