Sri Lankan junior shuttlers emerged victorious at the recently concluded Badminton Asia Regional Championship finals which was held in Fujairah, Dubai.
Sri Lanka’s team members Pulina Wellalage, Shenuk Samararatne and Varangana Jayawardena clinched gold medals to bring honour for Sri Lanka at the tournament said Chandrika de Silva the former National champion who accompanied the team.
The victories over their Iranian counterparts at the Badminton Asia Regional Championship finals held in Fujairah, Dubai gave them a big boost said Chandrika.
At the Zayed Sports Complex,Pulina Wellalage of St Sebastian’s College the younger brother of cricket all rounder Dunith Wellalage won the men’s singles title by defeating Adil Sourati with a scoreline of 21-18, 21-09 in the final. He pocketed second gold when he partnered his schoolmate Senuk Samararatne to defeat the Iranian pair of Sourati and Seyed Mohammad Hosseini in straight sets (21-13, 21-16) to clinch the doubles title.
In the girls' singles final Warangana Jayawardene, a student of Lumbini College, defeated Aida Enayati 21-13, 21-16 to clinch gold.
The senior Vice President of Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB) Palitha Hettiarachchi who is the chairman of the National pool and development of SLB said the junior shuttlers progress is very good while SLB recently gave more chances to the juniors to get international exposure.
The President of SLC Rohan de Silva makes all arrangements to focus on next Asian Games while they are planning to get a foreign coach for the shuttlers said Hettiarachchi.
