Arushi stuns Sandhithi at SSC Tennis Tourney

Promising Arushi Thomas created a major upset at the First Capital SSC Open Tennis Championships when she toppled the favourite Sandhithi Usgodaarachchi in the Girls’ Under-16 Singles third-round match played at the SSC Courts in Maitland Place yesterday.

Thomas rallied around magnificently and had the better of Usgodaarachchi in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to move into the next round of the tournament.

In contrast, Gehansa Methnadhi cruised to a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Deyana de Zoysa and there were easy victories to Anielka Norbert, Venuli Jayasinghe, Akesha Silva and S. Nimasha.

Meanwhile, Abdul Cader was taken into a three-setter before overcoming Methika Wickramasinghe 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 in a Boys’ Under-16 third-round fixture.


(Girls’ Under-16 third-round): Anielka Norbert beat Damsini Wijebandar 6-1, 6-1. Venuli Jayasinghe beat Hesara Imihamy 6-1, 7-5. Akesha Silva beat M. Dharmarathne 6-1, 6-0.

S. Nimasha beat Devanjee Jayawardhane 6-2, 6-1. Arushi Thomas Beat Sandhithi Usgodaarachchi 6-3, 6-3. Gehansa Methnadhi beat Deyana de Zoysa 6-2, 6-2.

(Boys’ Under-16 third-round): Abdul Cader beat Methika Wickramasinghe 2-6, 6-2, 10-6.
