Isha Wimlasuriya Wijeyeratnam, Managing Director of Eco-Serene Biotech, a leader in commercial plant tissue culture, won three prestigious awards at the recently held ‘WCIC Prathibhabisheka Women Entrepreneur Awards 2022’, organized by the Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
Wijeyeratnam received the National Award for the Most Outstanding Start-up for the Year, Provincial Award for the Best Entrepreneur for North-Western Province and Silver Award in the small business category at an event that was held under the patronage of President Ranil Wickremesinghe and First Lady, Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe in Colombo.
Eco-Serene Biotech that specializes in producing high quality tissue cultured plants, exports its products worldwide. Their main markets are Netherlands, Denmark, Australia, Korea and the USA. Wijeyeratnam who comes from a background in Plant Sciences, and Business Administration has emerged in recent times as a force to be reckoned with in the business
“I would like to thank the Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce for organizing this event because it gives much needed publicity to female entrepreneurs. This is also a great inspiration for women who want to get into business. In Sri Lanka some believe that there is a clear demarcation of things that men and women should do. This is not the case,” she said. Wijeyeratnam said that she established the company in Kurunegala because working with rural communities and providing job opportunities for the women there gives her immense personal satisfaction. “Seeing young people in rural areas excel makes me very happy. Giving them opportunities is an investment for the future,” she said.
