Police yesterday arrested two suspects who were transporting high-powered explosives in a lorry at Vilattawa in the Kurunegala - Mannar road. The lorry had been stopped at a road checkpoint in Vilattawa and the explosives were found in a secret compartment built inside the lorry. The police found 89 plastic pipes filled with gelignite, service threads used for explosions, 900 electric detonators used to detonate bombs in the secret chamber.
The Bingiriya police say that the lorry was going towards Chilaw from Wariyapola.
The two suspects aged 33 and 34 are residents of Silawathura, Mannar. During interrogation they had said that they were taking the explosives to Mannar to be sold there. Information has been revealed during questioning that they received these explosives from a person in Kurunegala. The suspects have said that these explosives are used to kill fish. The police are investigating.
