Representatives from Sri Lankan banks based in Dubai told Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara that there is a drop in Sri Lankan migrant workers using official channels such as banks to send their money home due to misleading information.
They urged the Minister to continuously make the workers aware about the truth and the importance of sending money using official channels.
They informed this to Minister Nanayakkara during his recent official visit to Dubai.
The Minister and the Bank officials discussed the reasons for the drop in migrant worker remittances, ways to counter false propaganda and how to encourage workers to send money home using official channels.
They also discussed ways to increase remittances and achieve the goal of reaching 1 billion USD per month.
An agreement was reached to launch an awareness campaign to encourage Sri Lankan migrant workers to send money home using official channels and also get the support of all officials representing Sri Lankan banks based in Dubai towards the effort.
