Paper shortage hampers work under RTI Act

The paper shortage in the country has affected the process of providing information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, member of the RTI Commission and attorney-at-law Jagath Liyana Arachchi said.

He said the information officers of the public authorities appointed under the RTI Act have informed that they are facing difficulties when providing copies of the documents requested by the public due to the paper shortage.

In addition, he said that the Act itself has mentioned the amount that can be charged for each copy provided by the information officers. But, as the cost has gone up, it is difficult to issue copies of requested documents at this price.

He said accordingly, e-mail would be the best option to make requests to the public authorities and for the public authorities to provide requested details to the public.
