Former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal and former Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga were noticed to appear before Fort Magistrate’s Court on February 17 in connection with the private plaint filed by Ven. Thiniyawala Palitha Thera for allegedly giving US$ 6.5 million to Imad Shah Suberi, a Pakistani national residing in the United States.
Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage made this order after considering the submissions made by President’s Counsel, Maithri Gunaratne on behalf of Ven.Thiniyawala Palitha Thera as an amended complaint.
It is stated in the complaint that the money belonging to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has been paid to this individual without any legal basis or authority and the money has been lost to the Government of Sri Lanka.
Former Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga has informed that he entered into an agreement with the company called WR Group in late April or early May 2014 and through a service agreement, it will provide services including strategic consultancy in relation to the formulation of commercial and public policies with the United States of America and other parties.
It is stated in the complaint that they have agreed to pay US$ 8.5 million between 2014.06.01 and 2014.10.01 and it has been revealed through the information received under the Right of Information Act.
The complainant has stated that there is no document to confirm that there is any relationship between Imad Shah Suberi and WR Group.
