Venerable Batagedara Wimalabuddhi Thera said that by preaching the virtues of the Buddha in the form of sermons, a flavour of meaning emerges, and by preaching in the form of pirith, a flavour of sound emerges.
The Thera also emphasized that the qualities of the Buddha is still present in the universe as it was then. The Thera mentioned this at the commencement of the all night pirith chanting held at theDepartment of Government Information on January 28 .
This Pirith chanting ceremony was organized this time to bless the government, the ministry of mass media, the department of information as well as Sri Lankans.
Wimalabuddhi Thera also had the following to say;“Every word of Samma Sambuddha’s preaching has meaning and sound included in them. When delivering a sermon, we take a verse, a sutta, a stanza, divide it into parts and analyze it, praise it, give a parable and bring out the meaning and point it out. It evokes a timeless and all-time meaning that is as valid today as it was in the time of the Buddha.
“However, in chanting pirith what emerges instead of the flavour of the meaning is the flavour of sound. With every note of that flavour of sound, we feel blessed; we are given power; and it is a reason to bring about blessings; Our sicknesses and sufferings lessen; It is also a reason to get rid of evil hazards.
The flavour of sound that is created through pirith chanting is attractive. Reciting the merits of the Buddha -the Thathagatha Lovuthura Sambuddha, is not like the scent of a desaman, idda (jasmine) flower blowing in the upper air, but it is wafted in the wind and spreads its fragrance all over the world,” the Thera said.
The Pirth programme was organized by the Director General of Department of Information Dinith Chinthaka Karanaratne under the patronage of Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Dr. Bandula Gunawardena.
