Trade unions in unsuccessful attempt to snatch political power - SLPP MP

It was the founder of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and then Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa who initiated the programme to seek the support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to stabilize the country’s economy, SLPP MP Prof. Ranjith Bandara said.

He stated this addressing the media at the SLPP party Headquarters in Battaramulla yesterday.

He said the coup to make the country unstable is still operational at different levels. A group of individuals are attempting to forcibly take over the political power of the country. The recently held unsuccessful trade union action is one such attempt, he pointed out.

The Parliamentarian said those who staged the trade union action are the group of individuals who contributed to weakening the country’s economy for the past 75 years. “Citizens who love the country never take steps to further weaken the country when its economy is suffering.”

He said the SLPP was able to elect then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the President amidst the political and economic crises, as he was the best option at that time to address the political instability in the country.

“We are pleased that our decision is correct and President Wickremesinghe is giving the right leadership to the country thus establishing the economic stability.”

Prof. Bandara said that Sri Lanka will be able to obtain the expected support from the IMF by the third week of this month. The opposition is spreading rumors and baseless facts about this assistance from the IMF with the intention of discouraging the investors, he further said.
