“A truly democratic govt won’t harass peaceful protesters”

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) National Organizer Tissa Attanayake said if global democratic principles have been followed by our leaders, they would never take stern action against people who are engaged in peaceful demonstrations to win their demands.

Attanayake made these remarks at a media briefing held in Colombo on Tuesday (14).

He said democratic governments always listen to the grievances of the people and try to give favourable answers for their demands.

Attanayake further said the ugly scenes of using water cannons and teargas to disperse demonstrators are closely monitored by the international community and it badly damages the country’s image and reputation.

“What Government should do is to listen to persons who are engaged in demonstrations and make suitable arrangements to give a positive response to their demands without injuring them using water cannons or teargas,” he said.

“The international organizations, especially the UNICEF, say that 60 percent of children in our country are suffering from malnutrition due to the high cost of essential and nutritious food items,” he said.

Attanayake therefore urged the Government to refrain from harassing peaceful demonstrators who are demanding their rights and try to solve them amicably.
