CentreStage Productions is proud to present the World Premiere of ‘Venus United,’ the newest musical by renowned Sri Lankan playwright and composer Jehan Aloysius. The musical, which promises to be both hilarious and poignant, will take place at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on March 17 and 18 at 7.30 pm. The box office is now open, and tickets can be purchased from the Lionel Wendt Theatre between 9 am and 7 pm on weekdays or 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.

This year, CentreStage Productions celebrates its 22nd year of bringing original theatre to Sri Lankan audiences. ‘Venus United’ promises to be yet another unforgettable experience for theatre-goers, with its all-female cast of triple threats, catchy musical score, and witty lyrics. The show’s creator, Jehan Aloysius, has described it as a celebration of women’s relationships and sisterhood.

As the curtains rises, the stage is set with a simple setup of chairs and a table, which would serve as the stage for the drama therapy workshop in which the story revolved around. Three women in their mid to late 30s enter the stage, each with their own unique energy and personalities.

As the workshop begins, the women are hesitant at first, but as they delved deeper into their emotions and experiences, their walls began to come down. They share stories of their past relationships, their vulnerabilities, and their dreams. Each woman supports the others, and the workshop becomes a safe space for them to explore their deepest fears and desires.

Throughout the show, the audience cannot help but empathize with the characters, as their struggles with relationships and personal growth were all too relatable. The themes explored in the musical are both poignant and humorous, with moments of laughter and tears that kept the audience engaged throughout the performance.

Aloysius’ musical score is an eclectic mix of musical theatre ballads, jazz, Latino rhythms, and even the blues. The show’s creator, who is known for his ability to blend different musical genres, has said that he hopes the music will move and inspire audiences.

The show features an impressive cast of ‘triple threats’—Shehara Liyanage, Ayushka Nugaliyadda, and Nadine Ollegasegrem—who bring their considerable talent to their roles. Jehan’s musical compositions are performed by his long-time musical partner, Avanti Perera, while Vishan Gunawardana has designed the fairytale costumes.

Jehan’s last musical, ‘Rag,’ received nightly standing ovations and made international headlines, including the BBC in 2012. He has been shortlisted for the Gratiaen Prize three times, and his work is renowned for its ability to touch audiences’ hearts and minds.

The cast and director of ‘Venus United’ are thrilled to be able to perform for live audiences once more, following the challenges of the pandemic. They hope that theatre lovers will come out in full force to support the performing arts and experience the joy of live theatre once again.

Venus United promises to be an unforgettable experience for all who attend. Its hilarious comedy, catchy music, and thought-provoking themes make it a must-see production. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to see an original Sri Lankan musical that is sure to leave a lasting impression. Be at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on the 17th and 18th of March at 7.30 p.m. to witness this spectacular event.
