Suspect who stole luxury jeep remanded

Attanagalla Magistrate Manjula Karunaratne on Thursday ordered that a suspect who allegedly stole a luxury jeep worth Rs.40 million parked at a businessman’s house in Pasyala a year ago be remanded until March 29. The suspect, a resident of Pannipitiya, had allegedly stolen a luxury jeep on the night of February 6, 2022.Although the Nittambuwa Police carried out continuous investigations it had not been possible to find the culprits nor the vehicle.

Meanwhile, a few days ago, a group of Police officers from the Kuliyapitiya Crime Division had arrested three suspects who were said to be involved in stealing vehicles and while conducting further investigations, the luxury jeep that had been stolen from the businessman’s house in Pasyala was located.When the ‘B’ report in connection with this case had been called up on Thursday (16) prison officials had produced the suspect.

Nittambuwa Police OIC stated that three suspects including the suspect had been arrested by a team of Police officers from the Kuliyapitiya Crimes Division.

The Chief Inspector said that during questioning, it was discovered that the jeep stolen from the businessman’s house at Pasyala was in the possession of the suspect who was produced in Court that day.

He further said that officers of the Kuliyapitiya Crimes Division had located two vehicles stolen from the Attanagalle and Mirigama Police Divisions.

The Chief Inspector of Police said that it has been revealed during further investigations that they are a gang of thieves who are involved in the organized theft of vehicles and are engaged in preparing and selling these stolen vehicles using forged documents.

The gang has stolen a number of vehicles by dismantling them into parts and sold them.Subsequent to the Police presenting the facts, it was ordered to keep the suspect in remand custody.
