Four women who attacked cops on drug raid arrested

Thambalagamuwa Police officers have taken into custody four women who attacked police officers allowing a suspect arrested for having the narcotic called ‘Ice’ to flee.

The police later had also arrested the suspect who fled.

A police sergeant and a constable attached to the Kantale Police who were injured in the attack by the four women with sticks have been admitted to the Kantale Hospital for treatment. A team of officers including Sub Inspector Bandara Navaratne, who is attached to the Kantale Police, was on raid duty on Wednesday (23) in Kantale 93 area. Police said that when they stopped a suspicious motorcycle and attempted to check it, the person who came on the motorcycle had fled.

Police officers had chased after the fleeing person on motorcycles and arrested him near the Mollipothana Sinhala College, Thambalagamuwa. A small amount of the drug named Ice was found in his possession when he was checked.When he was about to be handcuffed and taken to the police station, a group of women who claimed to be his relatives had arrived and attacked the police officers with sticks and fled with the suspect who had been arrested.

Officers who were attacked had taken steps to inform the Kantale and Thambalagamuwa police stations about this. Then, a team including the Thambalagamuwa Police Station Officer-In-Charge had come and taken the person who had been arrested previously by the Kantale Police, into custody.

Thus, a person named A. M.Nurulla (47), a resident of Mollipothana Unit 07 area, had been arrested.

The four women who had assaulted the police officers and taken away the suspect, were then arrested. They are also residents of Mollipothana Unit 07 area. N. Nifra (18), A. Jahana (19), A.R. Sitthi (39) and A.M.Rakiyathumma (51) were the women who were arrested.

These four female suspects and the suspect were to be produced before the Kantale Magistrate’s Court.
