Reports from the Kegalle General Hospital stated that a young girl from Nilapalagammana, Alapalawala, Kegalle, who had her part of her left arm from the elbow downwards severed by her uncle, using a knife, was successfully attached by a team of doctors including surgeon Dr. Ananda Jayawardena, at the Kegalle General Hospital, yesterday (5).
The doctor said that the re-attached arm belongs to a 21-year-old unmarried girl who works in a garment factory in Polgahawela area, residing in Nilapalagammana area of Alapalawala, in the Kegalle police division.
There had been a land dispute between the father and uncle of the young woman now being treated in Kegalle General Hospital for some time and a clash had broken out between the two
sides on April 4 around 7 pm. At that time, the injured woman had been returning home from work, and she had intervened to settle the conflict between the two parties. Then her uncle
had hit the girl’s left arm below the elbow with a blow from a manna knife, and her hand had been severed and fallen to the ground. Later, the neighbours had put the severed hand in a
polythene bag with ice cubes and immediately taken the injured woman to the Kegalle General Hospital. A team of doctors including consultant surgeon Dr. Ananda Jayawardena carried out a successful operation that lasted for almost four hours from 9 pm to 1 am yesterday, and the hand had been attached as it had been.
The injured girl is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the Kegalle General Hospital.
Consultant surgeon Dr. Ananda Jayawardena said that they had to focus on two factors when a patient of this kind is admitted to the hospital.
“When we receive a patient like this, we have to think about first saving the patient’s life. Then action should be taken to save the severed organ. When the patient was
brought to the hospital, she had lost a lot of blood. First we had to give her a blood transfusion in order to save her life.
