Colombo Additional Coroner hospitalised after assault

Colombo National Hospital’s Additional Coroner Iresha Samaraweera was hospitalized yesterday (28) due to an incident of assault.

The coroner was assaulted yesterday (28) morning as she was about to open her office. Upon her arrival at the workplace, the coroner noticed a suspicious person roaming around and focused on him. At the same time, she said that she had thought he was going to urinate and when she called out to prevent it, he came in front of her and continuously hit her with his umbrella.

She has sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Ward 73 of the Colombo National Hospital. Colombo Coroner Ashraf Rumi also said that two other female coroners also work in the Colombo National Hospital’s post-mortem office. “I have been working in this place for about 22 years. But this is the first time something like this happened. This place is insecure as anyone can enter the premises without being checked through the gate. The authorities are requested to install a CCTV camera system at the relevant place and ensure security,” he said.
