Prisons Department sources said that former Mahara Prisons Superintendent and other Prison officials are preparing to file an appeal to a higher court, demanding that their arrest be prevented in connection with the alleged shooting of 11 inmates during a protest by the inmates in the Mahara Jail. The report also states that the Prison authorities have sought the advice of the Attorney General in this regards.
On November 30, 2020, the Welisara Magistrate decided that the shooting and killing of 11 prisoners during the unrest was a crime, and ordered the CID to immediately arrest all the prison officials involved in the incident and present them to court.
