Three who attacked Constable arrested in Peliyagoda

Kelaniya Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau arrested three persons including a woman who attacked a police constable on duty near the Peliyagoda Jeyaraj Fernandopulle flyover. He was attacked when he attempted to take into custody

a person who drove a motorcycle without a safety helmet. The mob freed the suspect who was in custody and escaped.

Peliyagoda Police say that the Police Constable who was injured in the attack by this group has been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital and is currently undergoing treatment.

The Constable was deployed on duty yesterday (24) near the Jeyaraj Fernandopulle flyover near the Pattiya junction on the main road from Colombo to Kandy. He saw a motorcycle ridden by a person without a safety helmet and stopped it and checked it. Then he found that the rider was drunk. The officer informed the Peliyagoda Police Traffic Division where he works to come there to pick up this motorcyclist.

The police officer was attacked while a team of officers from the police was arriving at the spot.

Police say that some people who claim to be friends of the motorcyclist came to the spot and attacked the Constable and fled with the motorcyclist who was in his custody.

At this time, a group of traffic police officers chased after the suspects and arrested them at Kelaniya. When the group was about to be brought to the police station, a group including the motorcyclist’s mother came to the place and behaved riotously, preventing the police officers from arresting the suspect. Then the officers of the Kelaniya Division Criminal Investigation Department came there and arrested the 20-year-old motorcyclist, his 22-year-old friend and the 50-year-old mother. These suspects are residents of the Pattiya area.
