With the resumption of the international animal exchange programme that was temporarily suspended during the COVID period, the Jaguar named Leno, who was acquired by the Dehiwala Zoo from the Best Zoo in the Netherlands last January, and the female Jaguar named Leah which was acquired by the country in 2019 from the Artis Zoo in the Netherlands, were housed together from yesterday (1) morning.

A jaguar named ‘Leno’ acquired from Netherlands on January 26 this year, was aged two years at the time, and two pairs of giant squirrels from Sri Lanka were presented to the Best Zoo in exchange.

In a naming contest held on Valentine’s Day this year, a child who visited the Dehiwala Zoo named the Jaguar as Leno.

A female jaguar named ‘Leah’ spent a long time without a partner at the Dehiwala Zoo, and yesterday (1) it is of significant that she got a partner.

The black-coloured Leah’s skin is characterized by a very dark black due to the production of too much of the pigment melanin which is outstanding.

The zoo authorities are confident that many jaguar cubs will be born to this couple at the Dehiwala zoo.Along with this, yesterday (1) the public were given the opportunity of seeing more than 30 macaws being protected under the animal conservation programme of the Dehiwala Zoo.
