Over 2.5 Mn devotees at A’pura District Poson Festival - Steering Committee

The three day 2023 State Poson Festival celebrated at Mihintale in the Anuradhapura and Thanthirimale Sacred Cities ended yesterday.

According to the State Poson Festival Steering Committee over 2.5 million devotees had visited Anuradhapura and Mihintale during June 2 and 3 for religious observances.

Anuradhapura Government Agent Janaka Jayasundara said that the celebrations were held in a very peaceful manner with no incidents of criminal activities or sudden deaths by drowning or traffic accidents reported during the Poson festival in the Anuradhapura District.

The main Poson Festival was conducted at the historic Mihintale Sacred City with large crowds participating in the main religious events including historic Mihintale Mihindu Perahera and Aloka Pooja.

Mihinthale Raja Maha Viharadhipathi Ven. Dr. Walawahengunawe Dhammarathana Nayaka Thera told the Daily News that, 2331 years ago Arahath Mahinda Thera in a Dhamma revolution created a spiritually advanced civilized society and we are true descendents from the Arahath Mahinda era.

Atamasthanadhipathi Ven. Dr. Pallegama Hemarathana Nayaka Thera told the Daily News that the Poson Festival in Anuradhapura was conducted sans carnivals, musical shows, unwarranted commercial advertising programmes etc. which immensely helped maintain a peaceful religious atmosphere in the Holy City.
