Eight arrested over digging for artefacts in Nagancholai

Eight persons including an Army soldier who were involved in digging an ancient dagaba in Nagancholai in Mullaitivu for treasure were arrested by the officers of the Police Special Task Force on Tuesday.

Investigations began after the eightsuspects arrested by the officers of the Police Special Task Force were handed over to the Mulliyavalai police. It is revealed that this has been excavated by a group of people from Mulliawela, Kanukkeni, Nochchiyagama, Rajanganaya, Saliyaashokapura, Ambalantota and Tambuttegama under the direction of a soldier who is currently working in a military camp in Mullaithivu area. The team has also used a modern scanning machine.

At this time, based on the information received by the officers of the Police Special Task Force, a group of officers went to the forest and arrested the persons who were digging for treasures.

The site of the treasure is a Buddhist archeological site and Tamils call the area Nagancholai as Naipena and Nagas are carved in rock carvings near the site. Mulliyavalai police have taken steps to present the eight arrested suspects to the Mullaitivu court.
