Rs.2.6 Mn compensation, two years’ RI for causing Policeman’s death

Colombo High Court Judge Navaratne Marasinghe yesterday sentenced Navidu Umesh Ratnayake who was accused of driving at high speed, recklessly under the influence of liquor and causing the death of a Police officer. Two years Rigorous Imprisonment suspended for 15 years was imposed.

The High Court Judge, who imposed a suspended prison sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to the offence.

He was also ordered to pay a compensation of Rs.2.6 million to the wife of the Police Inspector who died after being seriously injured in the accident on the duplication road on February 24, 2019.

The Court also imposed a fine of Rs.150,000 for the damages caused to the Police motorbicycle. The Attorney General filed indictments against him with the charges causing death to Police Inspector Ananda Sagara Sarachchandra by driving at high speed, recklessly and carelessly under the influence of liquor.
