Public Security Minister Tiran Alles told Parliament yesterday that investigations will be conducted on 73 Police officers who shirked their duties on May 9 last year when there was a conflict situation in the country.
The Minister said that preliminary investigations are conducted on 62 Chief Police Inspectors, a female Chief Police Inspector, six Police Inspectors, a Deputy Inspector General, a Police Sergeant, and two Police Constables. The Minister said that the Special Investigation Unit of the Sri Lanka Police is carrying out a preliminary investigation right now and that 38 officers have been transferred considering that they may be a hindrance to the preliminary investigations.
Minister Tiran Alles said this in response to a question raised by MP Jagath Kumara Sumithraarachchi. Minister Alles, further said that the cases related to interference with the duties of Police Officers are being heard in court.
Apart from MPs and Ministers, only 4,500 police personnel have been deployed for security of other individuals. The Minister further said that the media reports published in this regard recently are false.
