Increasing local production, only solution to egg price issue - Minister

The only solution to the problem regarding egg prices is to focus on increasing local egg production, Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said.

The Minister was responding to a question by a journalist at the Cabinet media briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday.

Minister Dr. Gunawardhana said that if more eggs are produced at a price higher than the cost of production, the price will automatically go up and for that, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Animal Husbandry Department are working to revive the collapsed egg industry.

The Minister said that the price control and rationing system severely hinders the functioning of the market and that it is not theoretically accepted that the price can be manipulated.

He emphasized that a stock can be imported and released to the market to cover the temporary shortage of eggs, and this will create competitiveness, but it is difficult to do this at a fully controlled price in every case, as the market forces are behaving.

The Minister said that consumers should refrain from buying those products when there is a price they cannot afford and reminded that consumers have autonomy, that is, they have the ability to spread more power in the market.

The Minister recalled that both the demand and supply sides should intervene for this situation and that a separate committee has been appointed on food safety for this purpose and he submitted this problem for special attention.
