A new Fisheries Act is being prepared with new regulations, which will be submitted to Parliament shortly, Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda said. The Minister met a delegation from the European Union headed by European Union Ambassador in Sri Lanka Denis Chaibi at the Fisheries Ministry recently.
The new Fisheries Act will be empowered to prevent illegal fishing and to be made it a sustainable and problems free industry, the Minister said. The Ambassador appreciated the efforts being taken to set up a Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) along with the Australian Government. He said that the EU will provide more aid packages to develop the sector.
The Minister said that 40 per cent of Sri Lanka’s fish production is exported to the EU member countries with GSP concessions.
Fisheries Secretary Indu Ratnayaka, Director General Susantha Kahawatta, Additional Secretary Dhammika Ranatunga and officials were present.
