Former Inter University Students Federation Convener Udul Premaratne and 22 others, who were indicted under the Public Property Act for damaging public property while staging a protest in front of the University Grants Commission, were yesterday acquitted and released from the case by the Colombo High Court.
When the case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Damith Totawatta, he ordered the acquittal of the accused as sufficient evidence has not been led to substantiate the allegations.
The Attorney General had filed indictment in 2020 comprising 29 counts including causing harm to public property, assaulting and injuring police officers with stones while protesting in front of the Colombo University Grants Commission and the Higher Education Ministry on or around October 14, 2010, against the accused.
