Interest free loan scheme for university students must be revived - PM

It is vital to give opportunities for students not only at State universities but also at private universities and he had done it when he was the former Education Minister, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena told Parliament yesterday.

The Prime Minister said that the government is working to solve the problems that have arisen in the Interest Free Students Loan Scheme (IFSLS) for those who have passed G.C.E (Advanced Level) Examination.

The Prime Minister said this while replying to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa who queried about the delay of issuing the gazette announcement on the interest-free loan scheme implemented by the government to pursue degree courses for higher education for the 2021/2022 batch. The Prime Minister said that the Minister of Education has brought this matter to the attention of the Cabinet and the course of action has been taken regarding financial allocations.

“I would like to recall that when I was the Minister of Education, I took steps to provide this facility to many private universities. During Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Presidency, steps were taken to increase the amount of the loan. Therefore, I think it is very important for these children not only to go to the university, but also an opportunity will be given for them to go to private universities,”he said.
