Senior Consultant Physician at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama told the ‘Daily News’ yesterday (26) that the number of dengue cases may increase with the rains experienced these days. Health specialists say that if the number of dengue infections continue to rise as reported these days, a dengue epidemic is inevitable.
The National Dengue Control Programme states that about 2,000 dengue cases are reported per week and 47,943 cases have been reported since the beginning of this year.
In total, 49.8 percent or 23,893 of the infected people have been reported from the Western Province.
The National Dengue Control Programme also states that 68 high-risk Dengue Medical Officer of Health Divisions have been reported.
Dr. Wijewickrama further said that if a person suffers from fever for more than 48 hours, it can be Dengue and should be treated without delay as delaying treatment can be life-threatening.
He also stated that by keeping the surrounding areas clean and free of mosquito breeding grounds, the number of Dengue infections can be reduced.
