The Fort, Jaffna train service will resume once again from July 15. The Northern line between Anuradhapura and Vavuniya was closed for five months from January 5 under
the Northern Railway Development Project. This was to enhance the track condition of the Northern Line from Maho to Omanthai in order to facilitate the safe, efficient, and comfortable transportation for the passengers and freight transportation.
Railway operations along the Northern Line have been limited to Anuradhapura due to the renovation.
A Railway Department spokesperson said plans have been mooted to commence the reconstruction of the northern railway line from Maho to Omanthai in the future with Indian loan assistance.
However, the reconstruction has been postponed until January next year due to impending rainy conditions due in the coming months.
He said once the construction is completed, trains will be able to run at an average speed of 100 km/h on the Northern Line.
