A senior Health Ministry official told Daily News yesterday (28) that the service of 255 medical specialists
who were about to retire has been retained due to the court’s decision to increase the retirement age of medical specialists to 63 years.
He pointed out that if the retirement age limit was reduced to 60 years, the shortage of specialist doctors would worsen and the innocent poor patients have been benefited due to the court decision.
By 2025, there should be 103 cardiologists in Sri Lanka, but currently, there are only 57. Nine cardiologists would have retired this year if not for the court ruling. It is estimated that there should be 2,700 specialist doctors in the country’s health system and currently, there are about 2,100, Health Ministry Secretary Janaka Sri Chandragupta said.
He further said that the doctors who undergo specialist training abroad must serve the country for a defined period as per the agreement, but some do not return to the country.
