The number of dengue deaths reported from all over the country has increased to 31 as of yesterday (30) according to the National Dengue Control Programme.
Since the beginning of this year, a total of 48,963 dengue cases have been reported. As of yesterday (30), 9,559 dengue cases have been reported for June alone. The highest number of infected people is reported from the Western Province and it is 24,402 which is 49.8 per cent of the total number of infected people. Sixty one dengue high-risk zones are identified from all over the country and besides the Western Province, the next highest number of cases is reported from the North Western Province.
Senior Consultant Physician Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama said that if a person has a fever for more than 24 hours, they should be suspected of having dengue and should seek treatment from a qualified doctor.
He said that people infected with dengue should be referred for treatment at the earliest and not at the last moment, otherwise, there is a risk of increasing the number of dengue deaths. He also said that painkillers other than paracetamol should not be given for fever.
