Arthur C. Clarke Institute’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Sanath Panavanna said the third research satellite, “BIRDS-X”, developed with the technical contribution of the Arthur C. Clarke
Institute engineers, is expected to be launched next year (2024).
Panavanna, who is also the founder of the space technology capacity development programme in Sri Lanka, has also worked as the head of the Sri Lankan engineering team in the creation of several satellite programmes such as Ravana-01, Kitsune and Birds X.
“We have contributed to the creation of several satellites so far. The Arthur C.Clark Institute and Japan’s Kyoshu Institute of Technology are working together to create the third satellite, Bird X”, Panavanna said. He further said, “This satellite is to be launched next year. Part of the design work is currently being done at the Arthur C. Clarke Institute and part is being done in Japan.”
Panavanna further stated that the purpose of these programmes is to develop the satellite technology capability of the country.
