A Sri Lankan male passenger who attempted to smuggle gold was apprehended by the officers of Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Unit at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning.
The suspect is a resident of Colombo aged 36 who was bound to Chennai this morning by flight no. UL 121.
The suspect had concealed 12 Gold slabs weighing 1400 grams hidden inside his shoes.
The value of the smuggled gold has been estimated to be over Rs 12.8 million.
Customs Narcotic Division has made the arrest at the at the arrivals terminal of the airport.
The stock of gold has been confiscated and a fine of Rs 1.3 million has been imposed on the suspect, stated the Sri Lanka customs.
