Escaped COVID-19 patient apprehended

UPDATE: A patient who escaped from the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) while receiving treatment for COVID-19 virus yesterday (24) morning was apprehended by the Sri Lanka Army.

The escapee was caught at the General Hospital entrance yesterday afternoon. When detected by the staff, several commando teams were deployed to carry out the search operation.

According to Police, he had arrived at the General Hospital in a three-wheeler, after escaping from the IDH.

The escapee identified as a 41-year–old male from Marble Beach Road, China Bay in Trincomalee, was admitted to the Welikanda Base Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 two weeks. He was later transferred to the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Kandakadu and thereafter to the IDH.

Meanwhile, Police Media Spokesperson Jaliya Senaratne said there is no threat of the COVID-19 virus spreading.

COVID-19 patient, who escaped from IDH this morning, was caught again by Army.

He was apprehended near the Colombo National Hospital, said the Sri Lanka Army Commander Lt. General Shavendra Silva.
