The Superintendent of Prisons, Angunakolapalassa Prisons, SP Pallethanna, yesterday told the Daily News that former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake serving a four-year prison term in Angunakolapalassa prison is safe.
He said this on being asked by us if former MP Ranjana Ramanayake had shown any suicidal tendencies that he had reportedly tried to kill himself in that prison as per some news websites.
“Those reports were lies,” said SP Pallethanna.
We also asked the former MP’s Media Secretary Lucky Weerasinghe about the situation. He said, “I used the minute once-a-month telephone facility given by the Prisons Department to speak to a prison inmate in checking this situation. I also contacted Prisons Commissioner Thushara Upuldeniya and other authorities about it,” he said and added,” There was nothing like it. These were sham media reports.”
The Daily News was told that Ramanayake is considering taking legal action against those who have spread those reports over media implying him as “suicidal.”
A message posted on Facebook had also denied that Ramanayake made any suicide attempt in the prison.
Former Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Ramanayake lost his Parliamentary Seat recently following the Supreme Court verdict sentencing him.
