NWSDB’s ‘Sanitation for all’ programme in Anuradhapura

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has embarked on a programme for educating Local Government authorities, public officers and heads of departments including Divisional Secretaries about the national plan being implemented under the theme ‘Sanitation for all’.

The Anuradhapura district awareness workshop was held recently, organized by NWSDB Assistant General Manager (NCP) Sudath Ratnayake at the Anuradhapura Kachcheri.

At the conference it was disclosed that the programme is implemented by the NWSDB in collaboration with Municipal Councils, all Local Government bodies, the UDA, Industrial Development Board, etc.

The NWSDB Assistant General Manager (NCP) said that sanitation security at hospitals, technical colleges, universities, prisons and police stations will be enhanced under the programme. There are also plans to construct 20,000 toilets in the Anuradhapura district. One hundred thousand septic tanks are to be improved and 20,000 new toilets are to be constructed in rural areas.

A sum of Rs. 1,750 million is being spent for improving sanitation facilities in Anuradhapura, Thambuttegama, Medawachchiya, Kahatagasdigiliya, Padaviya, Kebithigollewa and Kekirawa hospitals. Rs. 30 million is being spent for construction of toilets at Rajarata University.

A sum of Rs. 288 million is to be incurred for improving sewerage systems at the Anuradhapura prisons. In addition there are plans to spend Rs 60 million for improving sanitation facilities and sewerage systems in Thantirimale, Atamastana and Mihintale scared cities. To improve the present waste water management and public toilets in Anuradhapura new town, Rs. 650 million is to be incurred, Ratnayake said.
