Qatar to grant amnesty to 20 Sri Lankans

A total of 20 Sri Lankans including a woman who are imprisoned in Qatar will be released shortly on an order from its ruler who had given an amnesty for selected prisoners on account of the holy month of Ramadan.

The Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has pardoned a number of prisoners in a royal honor on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan. According to sources from the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment,(SLBFE), the Sri Lankan Embassy in Doha headed by Ambassador Mafaz Mohideen will assist the released prisoners for their safe return home.

The released prisoners will have to make their own travel arrangements for their return home.

According to sources from Doha, the Lankan prisoners were convicted for minor offenses and they were serving their shiort term jail during the past few months.

According to the Ruler’s directive, penalties of the prisoners will be waived off and they can walk out of the prisons scot free.

Meanwhile, some 2,000 women will be included among the 6,000 prisoners being released from prisons in the United Arab Emirates on the orders of its President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
