Welgama released from bribery case

Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe yesterday ordered the release of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Kumara Welgama from the bribery case filed against him.The Bribery Commission urged the Magistrate to release the suspect due to a technical issue in the case.

Accordingly, Bribery Commission officials requested the Court to release the suspect subject to the right to re-prosecute with the order of the three Commissioners of the Bribery Commission.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruptions (CIABOC) alleged that the former Minister had unlawfully appointed L.A. Wimalaratne as the Deputy Chairman of the SLTB on June 23, 2010 when he was the Transport Minister.

The Bribery Commission further alleged that the former Minister had allegedly paved the way to confer a payment of Rs.3.2 million to the Deputy Chairman as his salary and other benefits, causing an unlawful loss to the Government.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption had filed this case against former Minister Welgama under Section 70 of the Bribery Act under three charges.
