Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara said yesterday that steps will be taken to operate trains even with some delay under the present circumstances.
Around 22 train journeys were cancelled yesterday as a number of employees attached to the Railways Department had not reported to the work due to the lack of fuel.
Meanwhile, trains did not operate for nearly two hours yesterday evening due to the sudden strike launched by Railway drivers and guards.
The strike was called off in the evening but a number of trains were delayed causing greater difficulties to the commuters.
People who were planning to go home during the weekend were stranded at the Colombo Fort Station due to the cancellation and delay of trains
Several office trains to Rambukkana, Meerigama and Veyangoda on the main line and Panadura and Wadduwa on Coastal line were cancelled hardships to the office workers. Since there is a limited passenger bus service in operation these days, people used to travel by trains have to undergo many hardships.
Meanwhile, Station Masters attached to the Colombo Fort Station have withdrawn from service as the authorities had not taken measures to resolve the fuel crisis.
Spokesman from the Railway Station Masters Union said that no authority even answered the mobile phones to listen to their problems.
“If the authorities fail to positively respond to their problems, Station Masters in other stations too will be withdrawn from their services,” he added.
