The Fisheries Ministry has focused attention on the problems being confronted by local canned fish producers.
At a special meeting recently held at the ministry with the local canned fish producer's society chaired by the Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda it was revealed that the local canned fish requirement was 250,000 tins per day whereas the present local supply is limited to around 150,000 tins resulting from the prevailing critical economic situation of the country. ''The production of empty canned fish tins in the country has severely dropped due to the scarcity of raw materials.
Also the price of 'Linna’ fish variety used for canned fish processing has been raised up to around Rs. 1000/-.
