Newly recruited Graduate Development Assistants to be absorbed into teaching service

The Education Ministry will recruit about 12,000 trainee graduate school teachers from the 31,000 graduates who are now in the Government Service as Development Assistants. Education Minister Dr. Susil Premayantha has already instructed the Ministry Secretary M.N. Ranasinghe to hold a competitive examination to select the most deserving graduates for the teaching profession.

About 2,400 such graduates will be appointed to remote schools of the Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts.

A severe shortage of teachers is in remote schools and about 3,500 teachers of the Government schools have already applied to go abroad under the patronage of Education Ministry by taking the leave grant for public servants for five years,” Kurunegala Senior Director of Education W.M.Balasooriya said at a meeting of school heads of the Kurunegala District at the Kurunegala Provincial Education Office on October 18.
