The land plots in Battaramulla which have been leased out to the 1996 Cricket World Cup champions could be used for any mixed development project under laws governing such transactions, Urban Development Authority (UDA), Director General Prasad Ranaweera said.
He made this clarification at a meeting with the heads of state media institutions held online yesterday.
Following the 1996 cricket World Cup, the Government of Sri Lanka offered the players who represented the team 14 land plots of 10 perches each on a 99-year lease in appreciation of their contribution.
However, a controversy occurred recently when a group of players including team captain and former minister Arjuna Ranatunge requested permission from the UDA for the construction of an apartment complex in these land plots as a mixed development project.
In response to questions by the heads of media institutions, the UDA DG said “Those land plots were given to the players for their personal use through a Cabinet Paper. But, there are no legal impediments for them to use these lands for such a project as per their will.”
